Marc Jacobs, private tutor
I grew up in suburban Pennsylvania and earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. I've lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Denver and Boulder, CO before arriving in the greater Portland/Vancouver area in April, 2022. For most of my working career, I was an actuary in the pension industry and practiced as an enrolled actuary for about 10 years.
While working as an actuary, I was able to hone math skills but also found that I have a talent for teaching and communication. For many years, I was responsible for staff training, one-on-one mentoring and internal communications.
Since working as a private tutor, I have confirmed my love of teaching and skills of patience, insight and persistence in working with my students. My philosophy of teaching emphasizes attentiveness to my students and a one-on-one shared experience of learning as much as it does technical aspects of subject matter. The end goal of becoming more knowledgeable or masterful in a subject of study is enjoyable, and I believe it can also be fun along the way.
